Current Institution: Indiana University of PA (graduate classes), Frostburg State University (working in ResLife)

Where you went to school:
Undergrad: Shippensburg University of PA '09

What are you most passionate about in the field: Working with students in varying circumstances and seeing them develop as individuals, students, and leaders as they learn more about their institution and work with their peers and staff. I am able to see this working in Residence Life, and I am also very passionate about student involvement and service. The functional areas I am most passionate about and would like to work in are Leadership and Civic Engagement, Residence Life, Student Activites, or Conferences and Events Management.

Who has been your biggest influence in your career: My supervisor at Shippensburg University influenced my decision to attend graduate school and pursue a career in student affairs. My fellow RA's and supervisors at SHIP were a wonderful, hard working group of people that made me want to continue working with students and stay in the college environment.

Something exciting you did this summer: Visited Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh, PA, worked in Conferences and Events Management at Susquehanna University

Something fun that you do outside of your job or something we should know about you: I am a huge hockey fan and love the Pittsburgh Penguins. I also love Rutt's Hut's hot dogs. I think I would travel to NJ just to have a few.

Laura Arthur

Laura Arthur
Residence Life Coordinator
Towson University

Where you went to school:
B.S. from Xavier University
M.A. from Ohio State University

What are you most passionate about in the field: Helping students figure out their place in college, whether in terms of involvement, a major, or a future career.

Who has been your biggest influence in your career: My first residence life supervisor, Angie Kneflin. Angie saw past my shy exterior, motivated me to take a leadership role within our department, and saw me through several professional and personal hurdles. In her third year of encouraging me to consider student affairs as a career, Angie forced me to attend a Careers in Student Affairs conference. It was October of senior year, and within an hour of the conference, I knew that student affairs, not the career path I had decided on long ago, was my true calling. Angie’s support helped me see that the best things may be those you do not plan, advice I now share with my own students.

Something exciting you did this summer: I took my first trip out West to beautiful San Diego! My favorite parts were the seals at the La Jolla cove, koalas and pandas at the zoo, and running along the Pacific!

Something fun that you do outside of your job or something we should know about you: I love traveling, photography, and music- sometimes going to concerts, sometimes having a concert of one in my apartment. :) I also enjoy baking and adding peanut butter to just about anything.

What are you most passionate about in the field: I am most passionate about having the opportunity to create an environment where students are able to find themselves. I enjoy having intellectual and personal conversations with students to help them become more comfortable with me and assist them in the process of discovering their full potential.

Who has been your biggest influence in your career: Joanne Goldwater has served as my professional mentor since undergrad. She was the first person to suggest that I consider Student Affairs as my profession. Joanne has been able to provide me with professional growth opportunities and guidance to help ensure my professional success.

What are you most passionate about in the field:

I really love having the opportunity to help students grow and discover who they are as individuals and as leaders. I also really appreciate how much I learn about myself while working with those students.

Who has been your biggest influence in your career:

Definitely Beth, Director of Residence Life from my days as an RA. Beth gave me the opportunity to be the leader that I wanted to be. I learned so much and gained so many great opportunities from my RA experience and her guidance. She has been a champion for me in good times and bad, and I could never thank her enough for everything she has done for me.

Something exciting you did this summer:

The most exciting thing I probably did all summer was attend RELI (the Regional Entry-Level Institute). I also spent a few days testing my luck on the slot machines and on the blackjack tables in Atlantic City. Don’t worry, I didn’t gamble away my Res Hall!

Something fun that you do outside of your job or something we should know about you:

Having a fun time on a dime! It’s a art I have mastered and I love to share the wealth with those around me! I also love movies, traveling, and just relaxing at home on my comfy couch.
