Laura Arthur

Laura Arthur
Residence Life Coordinator
Towson University

Where you went to school:
B.S. from Xavier University
M.A. from Ohio State University

What are you most passionate about in the field: Helping students figure out their place in college, whether in terms of involvement, a major, or a future career.

Who has been your biggest influence in your career: My first residence life supervisor, Angie Kneflin. Angie saw past my shy exterior, motivated me to take a leadership role within our department, and saw me through several professional and personal hurdles. In her third year of encouraging me to consider student affairs as a career, Angie forced me to attend a Careers in Student Affairs conference. It was October of senior year, and within an hour of the conference, I knew that student affairs, not the career path I had decided on long ago, was my true calling. Angie’s support helped me see that the best things may be those you do not plan, advice I now share with my own students.

Something exciting you did this summer: I took my first trip out West to beautiful San Diego! My favorite parts were the seals at the La Jolla cove, koalas and pandas at the zoo, and running along the Pacific!

Something fun that you do outside of your job or something we should know about you: I love traveling, photography, and music- sometimes going to concerts, sometimes having a concert of one in my apartment. :) I also enjoy baking and adding peanut butter to just about anything.

What are you most passionate about in the field: I am most passionate about having the opportunity to create an environment where students are able to find themselves. I enjoy having intellectual and personal conversations with students to help them become more comfortable with me and assist them in the process of discovering their full potential.

Who has been your biggest influence in your career: Joanne Goldwater has served as my professional mentor since undergrad. She was the first person to suggest that I consider Student Affairs as my profession. Joanne has been able to provide me with professional growth opportunities and guidance to help ensure my professional success.

Definitely Beth, Director of Residence Life from my days as an RA. Beth gave me the opportunity to be the leader that I wanted to be. The most exciting thing I probably did all summer was attend RELI (the Regional Entry-Level Institute). I also spent a few days testing my luck on the slot machines and on the blackjack tables in Atlantic City. Don’t worry, I didn’t gamble away my Res Hall!

Amy Sine

Amy Sine
Assistant Director of Residential Education, UMBC
B.A. Frostburg State University M.Ed University of Maine

What are you most passionate about in the field?
I really like to create new programs, supervise staff and watch them grow and develop into professionals. I love connecting with students and student staff around the issues that are important to them.

Who has been your biggest influence in your career?

Probably, my friend Jenn, she is the person whom I call when I get frustrated or need a new perspective. She is who I bounce ideas off of or call for motivation. She helps me to think things through differently and to create some really good ideas. She is also a huge support to me and I think that has such a positive influence in my career.

Summer

This summer I spent a week off with my boys and spent the time visiting with friends. It was very relaxing. We also took a short vacation to the beach. {I prefer fall vacations, so I have lots of fun planned in the coming months}

Fun Stuff
I really enjoy tv :) Watching Glee and Modern Family are my hobbies! I also enjoy photography, wine tasting, and road trips! And of course quality time with my family!
